Work in progress: Braided Rug

First, a warning; this is a very heavy picture post! Sorry about that :). We're packing to move in a few weeks, so I decided it was the perfect excuse to finally collect all those old t-shirts that I never wear and actually do something with them. I gathered up a huge pile:

I know, there are a lot of brights in that pile...they're mostly my t-shirts, obviously. I cut the shirts into strips, roughly about 2 inches wide.

ImageIf you cut it right, it will turn into one continuous string of t-shirt (good tutorials here and here, for the interested). So, the t-shirts turned into this pile of yarn:

Then I just started braiding...

...and eventually I had this giant ball of braided yarn.

I decided to hand stitch it, mostly because I don't have the appropriate needle for my machine, and you can hand stitch on the couch :P. I just started coiling and whipstitching, making sure that the end of the yarn ball was tucked underneath.

I'm about halfway through the giant ball now, and it's looking pretty good:

Of course I have no idea where this is going to go (not that that's ever stopped me); it's only going to live in this house til next month and then...maybe the new kitchen? We'll have to see!
